As you know that tenders are already submitted for iCAS enabled MPEG-4 set-top boxes for DD Free dish DTH service. So DD Free dish DTH going to upgrade its free services in MPEG-4 quality with iCAS (Indian Conditional access system) encryption.
In an announcement, Prasar Bharati (Doordarshan) said that original equipment manufacturers (OEM) filed tenders for this purpose would have to be DD authorized OEMs to sell DD approved Indian conditional access system (iCAS) and firmware/middleware-enabled boxes.
Five set-top box (STB) manufacturers have been selected by Doordarshan for supplying encrypted MPEG4 STBs for its DD Free dish service. These original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are KMTS Engineering PVT LTD (SOLID), Modern Communication and Broadcast System, Velankani Electronics, BGM Holding Company and Millennium Technology.
For those who are already using open market free-to-air set-top box can upgrade their normal mpeg-2 set-top box to iCAS enabled MPEG-4 set-top box to receive extra 24 MPEG-4 TV channels. Doordarshan has already announced that it is now capable of carrying 104 television channels on its free-to-air direct-to-home FreeDish. Viewers have to buy these set-top boxes from authorized dealers and it will be activated by them. Very soon it will be available in your local market.
The existing DD Free dish viewers will continue to watch 80 TV channels, but will have to obtain iCAS-enabled authorised set-top boxes for accessing all 104 channels including 24 mpeg-4 channels.
But there may be one problem for viewers that they cannot add any other FTA channels in iCAS enabled set-top box because these set-top boxes are not free-to-air, these set-top box have iCAS encryption without any subscription or fees.
Now DD Free dish can be accessible by neighbour countries of India like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka using high gain dish antenna and FTA set top box but after iCAS encryption, nobody can access these channels without iCAS set-top box. So from now our all neighbour countries will never know that what happening in India if all DD Freedish channels going in encryption.
